Dog Obedience Training

Basic dog obedience training should be an activity that every dog owner participates in with their dogs. Think of dog obedience training much like you would think of teaching a child to have good manners and to look both ways before crossing the street. Obedience training can make your dog a pleasure for everyone to be around. Who knows how many times a "stay" or "down" command would prevent muddy paws from dirtying a visitor's pants or keep your dog from helping himself to what's on top of the dinner table while your back is turned. Of course the most important reason for dog obedience training is for the safety of the dog. Sadly, there are innumerable instances where dog obedience training would have prevented a family pet from wandering off and getting lost or being run over by an automobile.

You should begin dog obedience training as soon as you bring a new dog home with you by getting them used to walking on a leash. And most people will agree you should also teach your dog at least the following simple commands: "sit," "stay," "stop," "down," and to come when you call your dog's name.

When you are working with your dog try to be consistent with your training methods and keep a positive attitude. Never hit your dog or cause pain during dog obedience training. Teaching thru fear or intimidation will not work as well as positive encouragement and very often will just result in rebellious behavior. Keep your dog in good health, with regular vet visits and a proper diet. Just like children a dog will have a hard time learning when they are tired, hungry, or sick. The most important component of successful dog obedience training is to lavish praise on your dog when they perform an action correctly. Be kind to your dog, and shower them with love and affection when they follow your command.

Keep your dog obedience training sessions short, ten to twenty minutes at most. Try to make training fun for you and your dog, shower praise, praise, and more praise at the smallest success and don't punish with anything more than a firm voice at failure. Follow these basic rules and you will see results. Treat your dog with love and affection and it will want to please you.
